Middletown, NY (PRWEB) February 17, 2012
Whether a fan of the New York Giants or the New England Patriots, chances are that if you watched the Big Game on February 5, you shouted for your team. Now your voice is hoarse and your throat and ears feel irritated. Was the Big Game to blame? Maybe, but it might not be the yelling – it could be the buffalo wings you ate.
ENT patients may be surprised to learn that their stomach and esophagus may have a connection to their hoarseness. A condition called laryngopharyngeal reflux occurs when stomach acid escapes through the muscle sphincters at the top of the stomach and esophagus and travels to the throat. Many people with this problem actually don?t experience heartburn or any type of burning discomfort, so they don?t realize that acid is backing up into and irritating their throat. In addition to hoarseness and irritation, symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux can include thick mucus, a persistent cough, and even ear pain and post-nasal drip.
There are many possible causes of laryngopharyngeal reflux. While you might think that reflux comes just from eating too much chili or spicy food, stress, being overweight, eating before going to sleep, or eating and drinking certain foods or beverages also may be to blame.
An ENT specialist can evaluate whether hoarseness, an irritated throat, or an earache is caused by reflux and can recommend the appropriate treatment. The first step often is to cut out acidic and irritating foods and beverages such as tomato sauce, fried foods, chocolate, coffee, orange juice, carbonated soft drinks, and alcohol. Weight loss may be recommended. Your ENT can determine whether medications to reduce stomach acid or surgery are necessary to control laryngopharyngeal reflux and allow your throat and voice box to heal.
